" Not Ourselves, but the Cause"
The DBE (Daughters of the British Empire) is a nonprofit, nonpolitical, non sectarian, voluntary American Society of Women of British or Commonwealth birth or ancestry, who are citizens of, or reside in the U.S.A.
The DBE provides a large network of members across the United States, which can ease the transition for National and International relocations for members and potential members through our common background and understanding. It is the source of close and long-term friendships.
The DBE helps to support four District Homes with regular contributions made possible by fundraising events, such as fashion shows, auctions, international festivals, bazaars, etc. held by Chapters and/or States. Many members have personal contact with their District Home and its residents and help with entertainment and activities.
DBE in the State of Connecticut
In Connecticut we have five chapters that meet once a month to organize fundraising events and social activities for their chapter. The funds raised are then distributed between the Eastern District Home and other more local charities.
The State Board, which is made up of representatives from each chapter, also meets once a month to share news and organize statewide events.
Victoria Home, a skilled residential nursing facility, located in Ossining, New York, is the home Connecticut members support both financially and physically. Each Chapter has at least one 'special' resident to remember on birthdays and other holidays. The members visit the home to give parties, provide entertainment, lead discussions and visit with residents individually.
Each State in the region also has at least one representative on the Home's Board of Directors, thus playing an active role in the running of the Home.
